ANSWERING PARENT ATHLETES' TOP QUESTIONS ABOUT ALTIUS
ARE ALL OF YOUR TRAINERS CERTIFIED?
Yes, all our trainers are required to have their CSCS certification. The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification is a nationally accredited program that equips physical therapists and other health care professionals with the skills necessary to train athletes effectively. CSCS-certified trainers use scientific knowledge to design and implement strength training and conditioning programs, conduct sport-specific testing, and provide guidance on nutrition and injury prevention. This certification is considered the industry standard for strength and conditioning coaches and is often a prerequisite for professional roles in the high-performance field. In addition to the CSCS, our trainers hold various other certifications that enable them to specialize in different aspects of the fitness industry, making Altius a well-rounded, elite training facility.
HOW MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE?
Matt Yegge, the owner and founder of Altius Performance, has channeled his passion for teaching, coaching, and working with others, along with his love for sports, into a distinguished career in health and fitness. Graduating from the University of Colorado in 2008, Matt earned his degree and certifications in PT/DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy), CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), PES (Performance Enhancement Specialist), and CES (Corrective Exercise Specialist). Since 2007, he has coached, trained, and rehabilitated thousands of athletes, including Olympians, professionals, collegiate, and youth competitors. Matt’s extensive experience and leadership in the industry led him to build a team of qualified and certified trainers, shaping the standards of elite athletic training.
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL TRAINER-TO-ATHLETE RATIO AT ALTIUS?
At Altius, we ensure a maximum athlete-to-trainer ratio of 6:1 to prioritize both safety and the quality of care each athlete receives. This ratio is essential because it allows our trainers to provide focused, individualized attention, which helps minimize the risk of injuries, prevent recurring issues, and reduce concussion rates. A manageable ratio also helps prevent trainer burnout and reduces the likelihood of medical errors, which are more common when staffing is insufficient. Studies have shown that 18% of athletic trainers have reported at least one medical error in the past 30 days due to overwork. By maintaining our optimal ratio, we are committed to delivering the highest standards of safety and effectiveness in training, ensuring each athlete at Altius gets the dedicated support they need to excel.
WHAT KIND OF HOURS, DAYS, OR WEEKS OF TRAINING SHOULD I EXPECT FOR MY ATHLETE?
At Altius, the training schedule for your athlete will be tailored to their individual needs, goals, and current fitness level. Generally, athletes can expect a commitment of several hours each week, spread across multiple training sessions.
Days: Training typically occurs 3 to 6 days per week. This frequency ensures consistent progress while allowing time for recovery and adaptation. The exact number of training days will be adjusted based on the athlete’s schedule, competition calendar, and recovery needs.
Weeks: The duration of a training program can vary from a few weeks to several months or even years, depending on the athlete’s goals, progression, and seasonal requirements. Regular assessments and adjustments will be made to ensure the program remains effective and aligned with the athlete’s evolving needs.
Our goal at Altius is to create a balanced training plan that maximizes performance while promoting overall well-being and minimizing the risk of injury. We work closely with athletes and their families to set a schedule that fits their lifestyle and helps them achieve their full potential.
HOW DO YOU TRACK AND MANAGE MY ATHLETE'S PROGRESS?
At Altius, we meticulously monitor our athletes using a combination of objective and subjective indicators to ensure their training is both effective and personalized. Objective indicators include metrics such as distance, speed, heart rate, power, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE), which provide concrete data on performance and progress. We also consider subjective indicators like mood, fatigue, soreness, and stress levels to gain a comprehensive understanding of each athlete's overall well-being.
Our priority is injury prevention, which is integrated into every aspect of our training programs. While we establish set goals for each athlete, we understand the importance of flexibility. If an athlete encounters difficulties with sport-specific training, we may recommend additional one-on-one sessions or specific at-home exercises to address their unique needs. Our approach recognizes that training is not a one-size-fits-all process. At Altius, our commitment is to provide a tailored fitness plan that adapts to the individual needs of each athlete, helping them achieve and exceed their goals while prioritizing their safety and minimizing the risk of injury.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU EVALUATE MY ATHLETE'S PROGRESS?
At Altius, we assess athletes weekly to track progress and identify any potential risks. We analyze changes in their force profile and movement signature, which helps us gauge their neuromuscular function and internal load. Since our approach is customized to each athlete’s goals and needs, the specifics of these assessments may vary to ensure optimal performance and safety.
WHAT IS YOUR FOCUS FOR ATHLETIC TRAINING: PHYSICAL, MENTAL, OR ATTITUDE?
At Altius, our training philosophy integrates physical, mental, and attitudinal aspects to elevate your performance, embodying our tagline "Citius (faster) Altius (higher) Fortius (stronger)." Here’s how we focus on each area:
Physical: We meticulously prepare athletes for the specific physical demands of their sport. This includes enhancing strength, endurance, agility, and overall conditioning to ensure they are fully equipped to meet and exceed the challenges of their events. Our training programs are designed to address the unique requirements of each sport, incorporating sport-specific drills, resistance training, and recovery techniques to optimize performance and reduce the risk of injury.
Mental: Overcoming mental barriers like low confidence, anxiety, and nerves is essential for peak performance. Our mental training programs are designed to address these challenges by building resilience and mental fortitude. We work with athletes to enhance their motivation, sharpen their focus, and increase their intensity. Through techniques such as visualization, mindfulness, and goal-setting, we help athletes develop a robust mental game that enables them to stay composed under pressure, overcome setbacks, and maintain a competitive edge. Our approach fosters a positive mindset and equips athletes with the tools needed to excel mentally as well as physically.
Attitude: A positive attitude and a strong work ethic are crucial for achieving success and excelling in any sport. At Altius, we focus on cultivating these essential traits by fostering a mindset that embraces challenges and values hard work. We encourage athletes to adopt a proactive and resilient approach to training, reinforcing the importance of dedication, perseverance, and continuous improvement. Our coaching emphasizes goal-setting, self-discipline, and a commitment to excellence, ensuring that athletes are not only driven but also consistently motivated to push their limits and achieve their best. By instilling a growth-oriented mindset and a relentless work ethic, we prepare athletes to face both the physical and mental demands of their sport with determination and enthusiasm.
Mental Toughness: At Altius, we place a strong emphasis on developing mental toughness, often referred to as grit. This quality encompasses perseverance, resilience, and a deep passion for achieving long-term goals. Our training programs are designed to help athletes cultivate the ability to stay motivated and focused, even in the face of adversity and setbacks. We implement strategies such as challenge-based exercises, stress management techniques, and reflective practices to build and reinforce mental strength. Athletes learn to embrace difficulties as opportunities for growth, maintain a positive outlook under pressure, and consistently push their limits. By fostering mental toughness, we equip athletes with the endurance and determination needed to overcome obstacles and excel in their pursuits.
Commitment: At Altius, we believe that hard work and patience are fundamental to enhancing athletic performance. We emphasize the importance of a steadfast commitment to both training and personal development. Our programs are designed to challenge athletes and encourage persistent effort, while our supportive environment ensures they have the guidance and resources needed to succeed. We focus on setting and achieving incremental goals, fostering a growth mindset, and maintaining motivation through consistent feedback and encouragement. By nurturing this commitment, we help athletes continually evolve, overcome plateaus, and reach their full potential, both in their sport and in their personal growth.
DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH MY ATHLETE'S COACHES ON TRAINING?
At Altius, while we don’t collaborate directly with your athlete’s coaches, we value and take into account any feedback they’ve provided. Using that information as a foundation, we perform our own comprehensive assessments to identify next steps and address specific areas for improvement. We have great respect for the work of external coaches but prioritize what is best for our athletes, adhering to our own high standards to ensure their success and safety. This approach allows us to maintain the level of excellence that defines Altius while tailoring training to each athlete's unique needs.
DO YOU PROVIDE GUIDANCE ON NUTRITION AND SUPPLEMENTS FOR MY ATHLETE?
At Altius, while we do not provide detailed nutrition plans, we offer personalized feedback and suggestions based on your athlete’s individual goals. We can discuss our range of Throne supplements and provide guidance on which options may help optimize your athlete’s performance. However, it’s important to note that taking supplements is entirely optional and not a requirement for any of our athletes. Our focus is on supporting each athlete’s needs and goals through tailored recommendations and expert advice.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE INJURIES FOR MY ATHLETE?
At Altius, we are committed to helping you recover from any physical challenges, whether it’s nagging pain, post-surgery recovery, or fatigue after competition. Our physical therapy and rehabilitation services are tailored to get you back to your game and your everyday life. We offer a personalized approach, with a team of skilled professionals dedicated to addressing your specific needs and goals. Through individualized exercise routines and specialized equipment, we work to enhance your mobility, manage chronic pain and conditions, and improve your overall fitness. Our goal is to provide comprehensive support and effective solutions to help you recover fully and perform at your best.
WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT MY ATHLETE'S TRAINING? IS THERE A FEE WAIVER FOR SICKNESS, FAMILY ISSUES, OR OTHER GENERAL REASONS?
At Altius, we understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, and we strive to be flexible in accommodating these situations. We request that you provide at least 8 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a training session. This notice period helps us manage our schedule effectively and offer available slots to other athletes, ensuring that we provide the best service to everyone.
If you need to reschedule, please call our office to discuss alternative options or visit our schedule page for available times. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a smooth and efficient training environment for all our athletes.
DOES MY ATHLETE NEED TO LOG OR SUBMIT HOME WORKOUT ACTIVITIES?
At Altius, we currently operate on an honor system for at-home workouts, meaning athletes are not required to submit forms for their activities. While we encourage adherence to prescribed at-home workouts, it is ultimately up to each athlete to follow through. Choosing not to complete these workouts may impact their own progress and training outcomes.
We are in the process of developing an app designed to help athletes track their goals and performance, both at our facility and at home. This tool will offer enhanced support and tracking capabilities to keep athletes engaged and on track with their training regimen.
DOES MY ATHLETE HAVE TO WEAR SPECIFIC CLOTHES WHEN TRAINING?
At Altius, we do not require athletes to wear specific clothing for training but have established guidelines to maintain the cleanliness of our facility. We ask that athletes avoid wearing outdoor-used shoes in the training areas. While specific attire is not mandated, we do offer suggestions on products and clothing based on our research to help enhance your workout experience and performance.
