The return to sport process can be different for each athlete. It depends on the sport and the level of participation they aim to achieve. Here are the three stages of returning to sport:
- Return to Participation: The athlete participates in rehabilitation or sport at a lower level than their desired goal. This is because they are not yet medically, physically, or psychologically "ready" to fully participate.
- Return to Sport: The athlete has returned to their sport, but they have not yet reached their target level of performance.
- Return to Performance: The athlete has returned to their sport and is performing just as well as, or even better than, they were before the injury.
